VISIONQUEST Showrunner Terry Matalas Reveals the Main Reason Why Ultron Is More Human Than Droid in the Show

The series VisionQuest is the next chapter in the MCU, and fans are excited to get back to Paul Bettany’s character Vision after over five years of silence regarding his storyline.

Not only will we see Vision’s return, but also that of his father, Ultron, played by James Spader. Ultron was last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron back in 2015, so this will be an extra special treat.

Some fans were surprised to see in the trailer that Ultron spent more time in his human form than his robot form, but showrunner Terry Matalas has a good reason for that.

In a recent interview with Polygon (via CBM), Matalas explained that the choice was all about the man embodying Ultron, James Spader.

“People say it’s a budget thing; it’s not, it’s a James Spader thing,” Matalas said. “I love James Spader. Who doesn’t love James Spader? I just want to see James and I want to see Bettany.

“You’ll get plenty of robot action in the show. The show is very much inspired by that last scene in Age of Ultron between the two of them. But watching Spader and Bettany chew up the scenery was something I saw in my head from the very beginning.”

He went on to add, “I also don’t want to see a CGI robot. It’s not going to be able to emote and do the things that James Spader can do with just the twitch of an eyebrow. So that’s pretty much the main reason.”

It has been confirmed by Bettany that the version of Ultron that we will see in VisionQuest is the actual AI from the Avengers sequel, having been locked in Vision’s mind in a prison of sorts after their confrontation at the end of the movie.

So it makes sense that seeing the human form rather than the robot form of Ultron makes the most sense. Since he no longer has a body, Ultron can look any way Vision wants.
