Tom Holland Talks About Improvising Spider-Man's Most Emotional Scene in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
by Jessica Fisher · GeekTyrantAvengers: Infinity War was a devastating chapter in the MCU, with Thanos gaining control of the Infinity Gauntlet, which he wielded to eliminate half the people in the universe.
Many of our favorite characters were taken out by the blip, and everyone was impacted, with one of the most hard-hitting erasures coming from our Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland.
Everything was restored and made whole again in Avengers: Endgame, but Holland’s performance in the scene in which he fades away in Tony Stark’s arms has lived on as one of the most emotional scenes in the MCU.
In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Holland talked about the scene, and he explained:
“It definitely wasn’t written as long as it was on the page, and maybe it was just my insatiable need to milk that moment. I think the ‘I don’t want to go’ was maybe something that I improvised.
“Or if it wasn’t that it was improvised, it was that I kept saying it over and over again. Truth be told, that is an acting exercise that I have done since I was a kid to find real emotion. It’s to repeat a phrase, whether it’s ‘I’m so sorry,’ or ‘I don’t want to go,’ or ‘I love you,’ or something like that.
“It’s just a really, really effective way of bringing up emotions. So, I think that scene is an amalgamation of some acting exercises, Downey improvising, myself improvising, and also just the brothers giving us the perfect floor to dance on.”
The magic of Marvel has a lot to do with great source material, the best actors, incredible writers and directors, and everyone performing at the top of their game.
When everything is right, we get movies like Infinity War and Endgame, and we are also hoping to add Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars to this list.
