VISIONQUEST Episode 7 Finally Reveals the Mysterious Client's Identity

by · GeekTyrant

The mystery surrounding the Client in Marvel'sVisionQuest has finally been cracked! Episode 7, titled "Immolation," reveals who's been pulling the strings and sending Paladin after Vision. While fans had plenty of theories about who it might be, the answer turned out to be someone nobody quite expected.

With the Disney+ series heading into its finale next week, the latest episode delivers a pretty interesting reveal involving Ultron, Doctor Jo Carrington, and a familiar face played by James Spader.

For weeks, fans have been throwing around names like Mephisto, J.I.M. Hammond, Hex Vision, and even Scarlet Witch as possible candidates for the mysterious Client. As it turns out, none of those theories were correct, at least not in the way anyone expected.

Near the end of "Immolation," we learn that Doctor Jo Carrington was romantically involved with a man who looks exactly like Ultron's human avatar, played by Spader.

Things get even more interesting when Vision arrives at the estate of Phineas Horton, the man known as the "great-grandfather of robotics." Instead of getting answers, Vision finds himself surrounded by armed mercenaries. That's when the Client finally steps forward, revealing himself to be Jocasta's former lover.

It's a surprising turn, especially since we've technically seen this man's face before, just not this particular character.

Unfortunately, the episode stops short of explaining who this mysterious individual actually is or why he's so interested in Vision. Those answers are being saved for next week's season finale, which should finally explain how everything connects.

Of course, Spader's presence in the series has been one of its most interesting elements, particularly the decision to show Ultron in human form rather than keeping him in his familiar robotic body.

During a recent interview with Polygon, showrunner Terry Matalas explained why he wanted audiences to spend more time with Spader's actual face.

"It's funny, people say it's a budget thing, it's not, it's a James Spader thing. I love James Spader. Who doesn't love James Spader? I just want to see James and I want to see Bettany. You'll get plenty of robot action in the show. The show is very much inspired by that last scene in Age of Ultron between the two of them."

Matalas also explained that his vision for the series was built around watching Spader and Paul Bettany share scenes together, something he felt would be much more effective with the actors physically present.

"But watching Spader and Bettany chew up the scenery was something I saw in my head from the very beginning. It is prohibitively expensive to do a CGI robot 24/7, but I also don't want to see a CGI robot. It's not going to be able to emote and do the things that James Spader can do with just the twitch of an eyebrow. So that's pretty much the main reason."

It's hard to argue with that reasoning. Spader brings an unsettling personality to Ultron, and giving him the opportunity to perform without being hidden beneath a CGI robot makes for some great character moments.

Now the big question is how this mysterious Client connects to Ultron and what his ultimate plans are for Vision. The fact that he shares Ultron's human appearance certainly raises some interesting possibilities, but Marvel isn't giving away the full story just yet.

With only one episode remaining, VisionQuest has some major questions to answer. Hopefully, the finale delivers a satisfying explanation for the Client's identity and why he's gone to such lengths to track down Vision.

What did you think of the Client reveal? Were you expecting someone else, or did you suspect James Spader would somehow be involved?
