A WALKING DEAD Reunion Series With Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and Carol Has Been in Talks for Years

The idea of seeing Rick Grimes ride again alongside Daryl, Carol, and the rest of the original survivors is the kind of thing that instantly gets The Walking Deadfandom fired up.

It turns out, that dream reunion almost became a reality. According to executive producer and longtime prosthetic wizard Greg Nicotero, conversations about bringing the core crew back together have been happening for years.

BeforeThe Walking Dead: The Ones Who Liveever made its 2024 debut, AMC’s creative team kicked around the idea of a full-blown reunion series. The concept would have pulled Rick, Michonne, Daryl, Carol, and potentially even Negan and Maggie back into the same orbit for one massive chapter in The Walking Dead Universe.

Speaking on The Brandon Davis Show, Nicotero opened up about just how serious those conversations were.

"There's been a lot of talks about that sort of reunion-type show. There have to be a lot of great characters. I mean, we've been talking about it for a couple of years, even before the Rick and Michonne show."

That means the possibility of Rick reuniting with Daryl and Carol wasn’t some quick pitch thrown around after the flagship series ended. This has been a real, ongoing discussion.

In the end, the creative team decided to narrow the focus. Instead of building a large ensemble crossover, they zeroed in on Rick’s personal journey.

That choice led directly to The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, which brought Andrew Lincoln back to center stage and gave fans the long-awaited continuation of Rick’s story.

Nicotero explained the reasoning, saying:

"The people wanted to see what happened to Rick. That was it. And I think that was the great part about it, the excitement of like seeing where Rick went and what happened because it was always intended that way. It was always intended that we follow Rick and we see where he goes."

Instead of cramming every fan-favorite into one giant event, they chose to give Rick the spotlight and finish what they started when he was whisked away by the CRM helicopter.

As you know, Rick’s return almost played out on the big screen. Nicotero said:

"It was going to be a movie. We're going to do a Walking Dead movie.”

At one point, AMC fully intended to make Rick’s story a theatrical feature. That plan eventually evolved into a six-episode limited series instead, which arguably gave the character more room to breathe.

By the time The Ones Who Live wrapped up, Rick finally got something rare in this universe: peace. After the destruction of the CRM, Rick reunites with Michonne and his daughter Judith, closing the book on a journey that started back in 2010.

Still, the larger Walking Dead world isn’t going anywhere. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon has already wrapped production on season 4 and is targeting a 2026 release, while The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 is currently filming. The franchise keeps expanding, even as Rick’s chapter reaches a satisfying conclusion.

So what does this mean for that long-discussed reunion series? Nothing is officially in development, but the fact that it has been on the table for years says a lot. The creative team clearly knows fans would show up in a heartbeat to see Rick, Daryl, Carol, and Michonne back together.
