Elijah Wood Would Love To See a TV Adaptation of LucasArts Classic SAM & MAX HIT THE ROAD

Video game adaptations are having a serious moment right now, and if Elijah Wood has his way, another beloved gaming property could be added to the growing list of franchises making the jump to television.

While promoting his work onAmong Us, Wood opened up about a project he'd love to see revived, and it's one that longtime LucasArts fans will instantly recognize. During an interview with ScreenRant, the actor revealed that he'd love to see Sam & Max Hit the Road adapted into a TV series.

The classic point-and-click adventure game was released by LucasArts in 1993 and remains one of the studio's most fondly remembered titles. According to Wood, the property feels like a natural fit for animation.

He explained that the game had “a really great art style,” and added that it “lent itself to an animated series.”

There are currently no plans in motion, but it's clearly a project he'd love to see happen someday, and it's easy to see why.

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Sam & Max didn't begin as a video game. The characters were originally created by Steve Purcell in a comic series before eventually making their way into the gaming world.

The stories follow Sam, a detective dog, and his wildly unpredictable rabbit partner Max as they tackle bizarre cases and find themselves in increasingly ridiculous situations.

The franchise built a loyal following over the years, especially after Telltale Games revived the characters with three successful episodic adventure game seasons. Their unique blend of comedy, absurdity, and detective storytelling helped keep the property alive long after its LucasArts origins.

What's interesting is that a TV adaptation isn't a new idea. The Adventures of Sam & Max: Freelance Police actually aired in the late 1990s and developed a passionate cult following despite only lasting a single season. Fans who want to revisit the show can still find it streaming on Tubi and Pluto TV.

Of course, getting a new Sam & Max series off the ground might be easier said than done. The rights surrounding the franchise are a little messy, and Lucasfilm Games has largely focused its attention on major properties like Star Wars and Indiana Jones in recent years.

Even so, there are reasons for fans to stay optimistic. Lucasfilm Games has shown a willingness to revisit some of its classic catalog, supporting projects such as Return to Monkey Island while also backing the long-awaited Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake.

The timing may actually be better than ever for a Sam & Max comeback. Recent adaptations like Arcane, Devil May Cry, and the Sonic the Hedgehog films have proven that audiences are eager to see beloved gaming franchises reimagined for new mediums.

Studios are finally figuring out how to capture what made these properties special in the first place, and Sam & Max already has the kind of eccentric world and memorable characters that animation thrives on.

Whether Wood's dream project ever becomes reality remains to be seen, but the idea of seeing Sam and Max return in a modern animated series seems like it could make for a great project.
