Michael Caine’s AI Voice Sets Sail Through THE ODYSSEY Ahead of Christopher Nolan’s Epic Film Adaptation
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantFans eager to dive into the world of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odysseynow have a unique new way to experience Homer’s legendary tale. An ambitious AI-generated audiobook has arrived, and it features the unmistakable voice of Michael Caineguiding listeners through one of the greatest stories ever written.
While bringing Homer’s sprawling epic to the big screen requires a massive Hollywood production and a budget to match, ElevenLabs has taken a very different approach.
The AI audio company has released a nearly 13-hour version of The Odyssey through its ElevenReader audiobook app, using artificial intelligence to recreate Caine’s voice as the narrator and build an immersive audio experience around it.
The production was assembled using a combination of AI-generated voices, sound design, and music created with ElevenLabs’ own tools. The goal is to offer audiences a fresh way to explore the source material before Nolan’s highly anticipated film arrives in theaters.
According to Dustin Blank, ElevenLabs’ Head of Partnerships, the project was designed to stand on its own while honoring the classic story.
“Our version of it is another retelling of it that we think is really strong — it does justice. It has a cast of 20 characters, all from our voice library, and Michael Caine is a legend.
“He is a national treasure, and his voice means so much to so many people, and we thought that he, as the narrator, would be the perfect person to help tell this story for his part in it, and I think he does.”
Caine’s involvement comes through a partnership that began last year when he licensed his voice and likeness to ElevenLabs’ Iconic Marketplace, a platform that allows companies to commercially license well-known voices.
This latest project expands on that relationship, with Blank emphasizing that the company’s approach centers on obtaining permission and ensuring creators are paid whenever their voices are used.
According to ElevenLabs, Caine was consulted about the audiobook and approved the marketing materials connected to it. Whether he has listened to the completed audiobook hasn’t been confirmed.
Caine also shared his thoughts on participating in the project, expressing admiration for the enduring power of Homer’s story.
“The Odyssey is one of the greatest stories ever told. For nearly three millennia, its themes of perseverance, loyalty, temptation, and the enduring call of home have resonated across cultures and generations.
“By bridging classical storytelling with digital innovation, this timeless epic is reimagined for modern audiences, brought vividly to life through ElevenReader’s cutting-edge technology. It was a pleasure to be a part of ElevenProductions retelling of The Odyssey.”
This isn’t the first time ElevenLabs has paired an AI-generated audiobook with a major entertainment release. Last year, the company used a recreation of Judy Garland’s voice to narrate The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in conjunction with the release of Wicked: For Good.
The company sees these projects as proof that AI can make large-scale audiobook productions more achievable while still delivering a rich listening experience.
What’s interesting is how small the team behind The Odyssey was. According to Madeline Shue from ElevenLabs’ publisher partnerships team, just four producers handled the entire production over a six-week period, including multilingual audio versions, music, and sound design.
“It’s a very small team for what this is, which is a … very immersive audiobook production. [It was] previously not possible to do that type of work with a small team and a short timeline.”
Looking ahead, ElevenLabs envisions a future where creators can build projects using licensed voices and characters available through its marketplace.
That could potentially include iconic personalities such as Stan Lee, Judy Garland, or even characters from Hasbro’s extensive library of intellectual property. However, the company says it isn’t interested in pursuing AI projects simply for the sake of using AI.
As Blank explained: “We’re not going to do AI just to do AI.” He added: “We’re going to set the bar high. We want to provide amazing experiences for the users. I think that in terms of partnerships, it is an ambition to be working with incredible IP.”
Whether audiences embrace AI-narrated classics on a large scale remains to be seen, but hearing Michael Caine guide listeners through the adventures of Odysseus is certainly an intriguing way to revisit the legendary story.
