Awesome New GHOST IN THE SHELL Trailer Teases a Visually Striking Cyberpunk Anime Reboot

by · GeekTyrant

A brand-new trailer has arrived for Ghost in the Shell, giving fans another exciting look at Science SARU’s upcoming anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s legendary manga.

With the series set to premiere next month, Amazon is ramping up the anticipation with fresh footage that highlights the show's stunning visual style, intense action, and futuristic world.

This anime series looks incredible. Science SARU has developed a unique visual identity over the years with projects like Dan Da Dan, Inu-Oh, and The Colors Within, and that signature energy is on full display here.

The animation feels vibrant, fluid, and expressive while still embracing the gritty cyberpunk atmosphere that defines Ghost in the Shell. It’s a striking blend of classic sci-fi aesthetics and modern animation techniques that fans are going to love.

While many fans, like myself, were introduced to the franchise through the iconic 1995 animated film from Production I.G., this new adaptation appears to lean much closer to Shirow’s original 1989 manga.

That means audiences can expect some of the philosophical themes and cyberpunk intrigue that made the property famous, but also some of the stranger and more playful elements that were present in the source material.

The story centers on Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg who leads Section 9, a specialized unit tasked with investigating cybercrimes and threats beyond the reach of conventional law enforcement.

As Kusanagi and her team dig deeper into a growing web of criminal activity, they find themselves pursuing a mysterious hacker known only as the Puppet Master. What begins as another investigation quickly evolves into something much larger and far more dangerous than anyone anticipated.

The official synopsis reads: "The year is 2029. In near-future Japan, where the world has become highly information-intensive, with a vast corporate network covering the planet, electrons and light pulsing through it. But the nation-state and ethnic groups still survive.

“Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg, leads an elite combat unit, including Batou. While commanding her team, Kusanagi envisions the creation of a specialized task force to preemptively strike against emerging threats. Meanwhile, Daisuke Aramaki of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who had been planning to establish a similar unit, recruited Kusanagi and her team.

“Together, they begin operations as Public Security Section 9—an offensive tactical unit known as ‘Shell Squad.’ As they confront complex cybercrimes and international conspiracies, the existence of a mysterious, unidentified hacker known as The “Puppet Master” emerges on the horizon of their investigation.

“What fate awaits Kusanagi? And what is the Puppet Master’s true objective? A new era of cyberpunk action begins."

Fans attending this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival will get an early look at the series during a special event titled “Dive into ‘THE GHOST IN THE SHELL’.” The screening is scheduled during the festival, which runs from June 21 through June 27 in Annecy, France, giving attendees a chance to experience the series before its worldwide launch.

The show will also be part of the new “Ka-Anival!!” anime programming block, airing Tuesdays at 11:00 p.m. on Kansai TV and Fuji TV in Japan.

Science SARU has assembled an impressive creative team for the project. Mokochan, who previously served as assistant director on Dan Da Dan, is directing the series. Toh Enjoe (Godzilla Singular Point) is handling series composition and scripts, while Shuhei Handa (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off) provides character designs and serves as chief animation director. The music is being composed by Taisei Iwasaki (Metallic Rouge), Ryo Konishi, and Yuki Kanesaka.

Based on everything shown so far, this adaptation looks like it could be awesome. The combination of Science SARU’s energetic animation style, a creative team packed with talent, and a stronger connection to Shirow’s original manga makes this one of the most exciting anime releases of the summer.
