Destin Daniel Cretton Says He Believes That If It Were Up to Kevin Feige, WONDER MAN Would Not Have Been Canceled

It was a bittersweet weekend for Destin Daniel Cretton. The film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which he directed, made a big splash at the box office with solid reviews, but Marvel’s Disney+ series Wonder Man, which Cretton co-created, was canceled after its first season.

This was a big shock to fans, as season 1 was a huge hit, and viewers were eager to see the story continue. Cretton talked about the cancelation, and why he doesn’t blame Marvel boss Kevin Feige, in a recent interview with TheWrap, where he stated:

"I love that show to death. If it were up to me, we would be making that show. And I do believe that if – and I know this sounds weird – but if it were up to Kevin, we would be doing that show.

“I'm just talking; I don’t fully understand the business of streaming, but if the business was right, we would be making that show because I know Kevin loves that show as much as I do. It's a bummer. I’m heartbroken about it. But I need to fully understand the why."

Wonder Man had already been renewed for a second season, and the creative team was already moving full speed ahead on what came next. Showrunner Andrew Guest recently opened up about the ordeal, revealing that work on Season 2 was much further along than many fans realized.

“I feel how you all feel. And I just want to clear up what I can here. This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works. And Destin’s schedule, and no one’s schedule, was an issue. Yahya, Destin, Sir Ben, and I all loved making this show.

“All felt passionately about continuing to do it and were eager to. Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared. The writer’s room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year.”

Instead, Guest says the decision came from higher up within Disney and Marvel, despite the fact that plans for another season had already been approved only months earlier.

He continued:

“And there was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them — even though a few months ago it did. And that’s essentially all I really know.

“Numbers aren’t really shared with me. And even though the writer’s room hadn’t started, I had written the first episode of season two. And we had an outline for where the season would go.

“And everyone felt really good about it. It was gonna be a really incredible season that, hopefully, surpassed season one.”

It’s just a total bummer that the plug was pulled on this series. We don’t know what the future holds for the character Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), but hopefully he returns in some capacity soon.
