LANTERNS Confirms Sinestro’s Comic-Accurate Past With Hal Jordan

One of the biggest questions surrounding DC’s upcoming Lanterns series has been how closely it would stick to the mythology fans know from the comics.

Now we finally have an answer regarding one of the Green Lantern universe’s most important relationships, and it’s great news for longtime readers.

A newly revealed detail confirms that Hal Jordan and Sinestro will share the same history they have in DC Comics, giving the HBO series a much stronger connection to the source material.

According to a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hal Jordan will enter the series as a veteran Green Lantern with years of experience under his belt.

That also means his complicated past with Sinestro is already in place.

The report confirms that Sinestro served as Jordan’s former mentor before he attempted a coup against the Green Lantern Corps and was expelled.

Because of Jordan’s close association with his disgraced mentor, the Corps became concerned about the possibility that history could repeat itself.

They even planned for Jordan to recruit his own replacement in the event of his death.

That setup is pulled right from the comics and should make Green Lantern fans very happy.

Kyle Chandler, who plays the older Hal Jordan, explained that exploring the character’s past with Sinestro became an important part of building his performance:

“It was really interesting, because you’re getting into all kinds of different weeds of what goes on in their relationship in the past, a lot of which, for myself, is very personal,” said Chandler, speaking about his approach to playing an older Jordan.

“I created little things for myself with him that created a relationship that was very intimate and intense.”

That dynamic has always been one of the defining relationships in Green Lantern lore. Before becoming one of DC’s greatest villains, Sinestro was once considered one of the Corps’ finest members.

He convinced the Guardians that he had earned his power ring honorably, but everything changed after Jordan discovered that Sinestro ruled his homeworld of Korugar as a ruthless dictator.

Jordan exposed him, leading to Sinestro’s exile to the antimatter universe of Qward. It was there that he forged his iconic yellow power ring and fully embraced his role as one of the Green Lantern Corps’ greatest enemies.

In Lanterns, Ulrich Thomsen steps into the role of Sinestro. While the trailers haven’t given fans a full look at him in costume yet, one early scene shows Hal Jordan visiting Sinestro in an alien prison, which lines up perfectly with the established comic book history between the two characters.

Of course, Thomsen has some big shoes to fill. Mark Strong previously played Sinestro in 2011’s Green Lantern, and while that film had its issues, Strong’s performance is considered one of its strongest elements.

The series itself centers on John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they investigate a mystery on Earth. Stewart won’t begin the story as a Green Lantern, while Jordan serves as the experienced veteran guiding him through a case that appears to have much bigger implications for the DC Universe.

With the show embracing one of the franchise’s most important character dynamics, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Lanterns is taking its inspiration from the comics in all the right ways.

If the series can capture the complicated mentor-student relationship between Hal Jordan and Sinestro, fans could be in for one of the most compelling live-action Green Lantern stories yet.

Lanterns will consist of eight episodes, and a second season is already in development.

The series premieres on August 16, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
