Zack Snyder Says the 300 Prequel Series Is Moving Forward and He May Direct

Zack Snyderis getting ready to march back into the world of 300, and it sounds like he may personally direct part of the long-awaited prequel TV series.

Snyder recently offered an encouraging update on the project, confirming that development is moving forward and teasing his potential directing involvement. While story details are still being kept under wraps, the filmmaker sounds pretty excited about where the series is headed.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, Snyder was asked about the status of the 300 prequel and what fans can expect from his return to the franchise.

“It’s a very rich universe, the 300 universe,” Snyder said. He also described the project as “very exciting and very good.” Horowitz then asked whether Snyder intends to direct some of the episodes himself, and Snyder replied, “I think so.”

That should be welcome news for fans of the original movie. Snyder's 300 had such a specific visual identity, from its highly stylized battles and dramatic slow motion to its heightened depiction of ancient warfare. Having Snyder direct episodes of the series could help connect the prequel visually to the film that started it all.

The potential Netflix series would also continue Snyder's relationship with the streaming service following projects including Army of the Dead and the Rebel Moon films.

Exactly what story the 300 prequel will tell remains a mystery, but Snyder has clarified that it isn't connected to Blood and Ashes, another project that originally started life as an idea for a 300 movie.

Snyder developed Blood and Ashes during the COVID-19 pandemic, but his research eventually sent the project somewhere completely different.

“It was an Alexander the Great story that got hijacked by history when I did my research, and it turned into… a love story between Alexander and Hephaestion,” Snyder further explained. “It just completely diverged from the 300 universe completely and became its own thing.”

With Blood and Ashes becoming its own story, the new TV project is the one being developed specifically within the 300 universe.

Snyder directed the original 2006 film, which starred Gerard Butler as King Leonidas and followed the Spartan king and his warriors into the Battle of Thermopylae. The movie became a major box-office hit and played a huge role in establishing the filmmaker's recognizable action style.

Nearly two decades later, a prequel series gives Snyder a chance to explore more of that world without simply retelling what audiences have already seen.

There are still plenty of questions surrounding the story, cast, and production timeline, but knowing Snyder expects to direct at least some of it makes this return to 300 a lot more interesting.
