MARVEL ZOMBIES Season 2 Is in Development and It’s Bringing a Wild New MCU Twist

by · GeekTyrant

Fans who’ve been waiting to see what comes next after that bleak, reality-warping finale of Marvel Zombies, Season 2 is officially moving forward, and it sounds like Marvel is about to do something we’ve never seen before in the MCU.

According to Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum, things are already in motion in a big way. Speaking on  The Escape Pod, he revealed that production is actively progressing.

"I don't think this is a spoiler, but I saw the first animatic of the first episode of Marvel Zombies Season 2 this morning. It was crazy," Winderbaum teased. "I can't say anything about it, but it delivers not just on zombies, but also on an MCU thing that has never really happened before that we're very excited to do."

That’s a pretty loaded tease. Marvel has experimented with multiverse chaos, time travel, and reality manipulation, but whatever this “never happened before” moment is, it sounds like it could push the animated MCU into some seriously strange territory.

Season 1 already leaned into some dark and strange storytelling, even if it felt a bit constrained. Originally conceived as a feature before being split into four episodes, the series had flashes of greatness but didn’t always stick the landing. Still, it carved out a brutal alternate reality where heroes fell hard and hope was in short supply.

The finale left viewers in a pretty unsettling place. The Scarlet Witch reshaped reality using the power of Infinity Hulk and Ms. Marvel, trapping Kamala Khan in a world that looks normal on the surface but is secretly overrun by the undead.

Then there’s Ironheart. Revealed to still be alive, she appears to be trying to reach Kamala, who may or may not be stuck in some kind of trance while surrounded by zombies. It left plenty of room for the story to continue.

Despite mixed reactions from critics and fans, the show clearly found an audience. Streaming numbers reportedly came in strong for Marvel Animation, which likely helped push the decision to keep the story going.

Director Bryan Andrews previously opened up about how they approached that haunting ending: "We always knew it was going to be this. The question was how much to show at the end of the bleakness," Andrews explained.

"At first, we had a version that was really subtle, but when we were putting it up on reels and getting editor feedback, they said, 'Hey, maybe go for it a little bit more, so people feel more of a gut punch.'"

"I was totally cool with that, but I was very protective of not making it feel too overdone or too cliffhanger-y. I think we found the perfect balance," he continued. "There’s a bleakness to it, and yes, we know what happens after. So if enough people watch this and yell loudly enough, maybe we get to do the next one."

Well, people clearly yelled loud enough.

Marvel Zombies drops us into a nightmare scenario where Earth’s mightiest heroes fall victim to a zombie outbreak. A scattered group of survivors races across a devastated world searching for a way to stop the infection before it consumes everything.

The voice cast is stacked with MCU heavy hitters, including Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Tessa Thompson, Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Hailee Steinfeld, Wyatt Russell, Randall Park, Iman Vellani, and Dominique Thorne, all reprising their roles in animated form.

All episodes of Marvel Zombies are currently streaming on Disney+, so if you haven’t checked it out yet or want to revisit that ending, now’s a good time.

Season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but with animatics already in progress, it feels like we’re getting closer to diving back into this twisted version of the MCU. It’ll be interesting to see what that looks like after this big tease.
