Tom Cruise’s EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 Gets Discouraging Update

by · GeekTyrant

I really thought we were finally about to see this thing happen. For a minute there, it felt like Edge of Tomorrowwas gearing up for a long-overdue return. But now? That excitement just took a hit.

A new report has shut down recent chatter that Edge of Tomorrow 2 was about to move forward. According to the latest update, the sequel isn’t in active development as of May 2026.

That directly contradicts recent claims from industry insider DanielRPK, and a few other outlets, who said the film was lining up for a fall production start. It also knocks down a similar listing from Production Weekly that hinted things were picking up steam.

If one of the reports is wrong, I hope it’s this one. For fans of the original, this has been a frustrating cycle. Hopes go up, something promising surfaces, and then it all cools off again. I was excited when that report started making the rounds. It finally felt like we might actually see this movie!

Collider delivered the latest update, and while it’s not great news, it’s not a full shutdown either. The outlet explained, “While the project is not officially dead, it’s not exactly alive either.

“The cast and director Doug Liman have all been linked to the potential follow-up over the years, but fans shouldn’t expect cameras to roll anytime soon.” So basically, it’s stuck in that frustrating middle ground where anything is possible, but nothing is happening.

But, Collider could be wrong, DanielRPK has a better track record for scoops than Collider, so we’ll see how this whole thing shakes out.

Back in 2025, Doug Liman was still talking like the sequel had a shot. He made it clear that the studio hasn’t forgotten about it.

Liman said, “I do think there’s probably no better compliment to a movie than people wanting for there to be a sequel. Road House – there’s call for a sequel. Edge of Tomorrow, there’s no better compliment than Warner Bros. constantly bringing up, ‘Will you go and make another one of these?'”

The original film, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, hit theaters in 2014 and didn’t exactly dominate at the box office. It pulled in around $370 million worldwide against a $178 million budget. Not terrible, but not the kind of numbers that instantly launch a franchise.

Still, critics and audiences were all in, and it now sits with an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Over time, it’s built a strong fanbase that has been asking for more ever since. The concept still feels fresh, the characters are worth revisiting, and that ending practically begs for another chapter.

The cast, which also included Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson, and Noah Taylor. The movie had personality, humor, and a clever hook that made it stand out.

Warner Bros. has been wanting to make this sequel, so if it’s not happening this year, it will most likely happen at some point.
