HAPPY DEATH DAY 3 Gets a Promising Update From Jessica Rothe

by · GeekTyrant

Horror fans have been stuck in their own kind of loop asking the same question for years now… when are we getting Happy Death Day 3?

The wait has been long, but a fresh update from Jessica Rothe just injected some real energy into the conversation, and it sounds like this franchise isn’t done slicing its way back onto our screens.

Rothe recently caught up with ScreenRant and opened up about where things stand with the long-anticipated third film. While nothing is officially greenlit yet, she said that the idea is very much alive and kicking. In fact, she’s encouraging fans to keep pushing for it because that momentum might be exactly what gets it made.

“I think that is the power of zeitgeist. I think the more we ask, and the more we put it into the universe, it will happen. Because the truth is, Chris Landon, our brilliant, fearless writer/director, he has the whole third one figured out.

“And I’m sure he also has his version of the MCU, but the ‘ChrisCU’ with Freaky and Happy Death Day, and We Have a Ghost and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, they all could totally live in the same universe. That’s the crossover that I need right now in my life.”

The thought of Happy Death Day crossing paths with Freaky or even Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse sounds like chaotic horror fun, and honestly, it doesn’t feel that far-fetched considering Christopher Landon already has a roadmap in mind.

Landon has previously shared that he’s mapped out the story for the third installment, though he’s holding off on writing a full script until there’s an official studio commitment. So yeah, the creative side is ready. It’s the business side that still needs to catch up.

As for the story, one key detail has slipped out over time. The next chapter won’t trap Tree in the same repeating day like the first two films. That suggests a fresh direction, which is exactly what this series needs to keep things from feeling stale.

And if you were worried about whether Tree would still be at the center of it all, Rothe shut that down immediately. She’s all in, no matter how long it takes to get this thing moving.

“I think at this point, it’s just logistics. And all I’ll say to you and the fans is, whether it’s next year or when I’m 65, pulling a Jamie Lee Curtis coming back for Halloween, I will be there to finish Tree’s story. So, it’s just a matter of when they get all their ducks in a row.”

Tree isn’t just the lead of these movies, she is the franchise, and knowing Rothe is ready to jump back in whenever the call comes makes the wait a little easier.

It’s also kind of funny hearing her bring up the whole “ducks in a row” thing again. Apparently those ducks are still wandering around somewhere between Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures, refusing to cooperate. Seriously, what’s the holdup?

Anyway, if you’re feeling the itch to revisit the chaos, the first Happy Death Day is currently streaming on HBO Max. It might be time to relive the madness and remind yourself why this series still has so much life left in it.

Now we wait… hopefully not on this continuing loop.
