Edenderry garda station closed as gardaí hospitalised after becoming ill while handling seized vapes

EDENDERRY GARDA STATION in Co Offaly has been sealed off after it was evacuated following two gardaí being taken to hospital after becoming unwell whilst on duty.

Gardaí said in a statement earlier this evening that the station was closed due to “operational reasons”.

It’s understood gardaí had requested the assistance of the Defence Forces to the station on Wednesday evening. 

In a statement to The Journal, a garda spokesperson said two gardaí were hospitalised after becoming unwell whilst on duty earlier today at Edenderry Garda station.

The two garda members had been involved in processing vape products which had been seized from a commercial premises during an ongoing investigation.

Both gardaí are currently in hospital under medical assessment.

An Garda Síochána is providing welfare support to the hospitalised members and their families at this time.

Edenderry garda gtation will remain closed tomorrow, pending further examination and specialist deep cleaning.

Policing services in the area are being provided from Tullamore Garda Station

The spokesperson said An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time pending the outcome of ongoing enquiries into the cause of the members feeling unwell.
