Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts - heavy rain and possible flooding are on the way next week

AFTER A RUN of fine weather over the last few days, the country is set for one more largely dry and warm day today before conditions become more mixed next week.

Met Éireann says today will be mainly dry with spells of hazy sunshine and temperatures reaching between 17 and 22 degrees, with the warmest conditions expected in the west and Midwest.

Parts of the east and north may see more cloud, along with the odd spot of drizzle or mist.

Monday will start off dry for many areas, but cloud, patchy rain and drizzle will gradually spread across the country from the southwest through the day.

Temperatures will remain mild, ranging from 15 to 20 degrees.

The rest of the week looks more changeable, with a mix of sunny spells, showers and longer spells of rain.

Some heavy rain is possible at times, particularly on Tuesday and again late on Thursday into Friday, when there is a risk of localised flooding.

There’s also a risk of “a few thundery bursts” on Thursday, Met Éireann has warned.

Despite the unsettled conditions, temperatures are expected to stay close to or slightly above average for mid-June, generally reaching the mid to high teens.

There is some good news on the horizon, however, with forecasters saying conditions may become more settled again next weekend as high pressure begins to build.
