Chucklefish and co-developer Robotality have revealed the release date for their magic school lif sim Witchbrook, the long-in-development game set to release on 28th January for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and Switch 2, and PC.

Set in the seaside town of Mossport, you’ll attend Witchbrook College and take classes like Alchemy, Potions, Astrology, Rituals and more, studying up to learn new spells, pass tests and eventually graduate.

You can also start your own witch business to fund your studies, crafting items to fulfil orders – at speed on moped or broom – and set up a stall at the Sunday market.

And of course there’s the relationships, whether it’s just befriending classmates and customers, or looking to fall in love.

Bring your real friends into the game too, with support for up to four player online co-op.

First teased as Project Spellbound in 2017, with Chucklefish looking to ride the wave of Stardew Valley interest (for which they provided porting support for the console versions), it was then named as Witchbrook a year later in 2018. At that time, the concept artwork and screenshots showed the game with that face-on view familiar to many pixel art life sims. It’s not all been smooth spellcrafting for this game, given the lenghty delays that the game has faced. Early in its process, Chucklefish was lambasted in 2019 for the way that they used voluntary and unpaid contributors for the development of their previous title Starbound – refuted by Chucklefish at the time as having been accepted under no obligations for their work or time. It’s a long shadow that still hangs over the studio and its newer project, though they have embraced a zero crunch development policy since then.
