Rockstar makes GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S a free upgrade
by Stefan L · tsaRockstar has some good news for fans of GTA, but it isn’t a new trailer for GTA 6. No, with the next game on the horizon, they’re now giving out free upgrades for GTA 5 from the PS4 and Xbox One to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
From tomorrow, 18th June, all copies of GTA 5 on PS4 and digital copies of GTA 5 for Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions at no extra cost. There’s no explanation why physical Xbox One copies are excluded from this, but there you are.
GTA 5 released for the current generation back in 2022, and did so without any kind of upgrades, free or otherwise. However, it was heavily discounted at the time, with GTA Online free on PS5 and Story Mode for $8.50, and $8.50 and $17.50 respectively on Xbox. The price did eventually jump back up to £40 after the introductory period, which led us to wonder if it is worth triple-dipping on the game.
On the current generation of consoles, GTA 5 comes with graphics modes that go up to 4k and 60fps, longer draw distances, texture upgrades, HDR support and ray tracing options. There’s also faster loading times, 3D audio and things like haptic feedback on the DualSense controller.
Pondering that triple-dip, Gamoc said, “It will become a significantly harder sell once they jump back up to £40 for the single player. The game is really showing its age under the new gen facelift and, if you were interested in it, you’ve probably played and enjoyed it already. It doesn’t really look like a new game, but it doesn’t look quite as old anymore either. Of course if you’re a fan of GTA Online, then playing at a higher frame rate with better graphics can only be a positive, and since that’s free on PS5 it’s a no-brainer.”
Now it’s free for anyone still on the last generation version, and that’s only a good thing.
