Modern Warfare 4 is coming to the Switch 2, but not PS4 or Xbox One

The times are a-changing for Call of Duty, as Modern Warfare 4’s announcement brings with it some changes for how you can play this game. It’s coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, as you’d expect, but the old generation PS4 and Xbox One are out, and the hot new Switch 2 is in their place.

That’s right, Modern Warfare 4 is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, marking the first time that Call of Duty has been on a Nintendo platform since Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Wii U!

This is a day and date launch, dropping onto Switch 2 on 23rd October.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s development is being led by Infinity Ward, with other Activision studios lending their support. For the PC version, Beenox is helping to optimise the experience, while for Switch 2, they’ve partnered with Digital Legends to develop the game natively for the system. It will be really interesting to see how the game performs on Switch 2, though the past year has shown just how capable the system is, thanks to being able to tap into DLSS upscaling. It’s led to great ports of older titles and day-one cross-platform launches for the likes of Resident Evil requiem and Pragmata.

As for the PS4 and Xbox One, Activision and Microsoft have clearly felt that it’s time to move on from the old generation. It’s not just Modern Warfare 4 that will be skipping those systems, but the free-to-play Call of Duty: Warzone will also be leaving them behind. In fact, they’re removing it from download on 4th June, and once Season 1 of the Modern Warfare 4 Warzone era begins, support will be pulled entirely.

Activision has today revealed the next instalment of the hugely popular Call of Duty franchise, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 heading to Korea, featuring a bearded Captain Price and using the tag line “No line holds forever.” Read more about that here.
