MSSA, GSMA partner for scaleable 3GPP IoT services

The Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA) is collaborating with the GSMA. It is for mobile satellite services in the realm of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Specifically, they are looking to integrating Direct-to-Device and IoT services, via satellite services, based on 3GPP standards.

The organisations say they will support new standards for “sustainable network design and operation”. This will be to benefit the whole mobile ecosystem, “enhancing global connectivity for consumers and enterprises”.

“This alliance with GSMA represents a bold leap forward in the evolution of mobile connectivity, said Mark Dankberg, Chairman, MSSA.

“We are joining forces to push the limits of what’s possible, bringing the power of satellite technology to millions of users globally. This is more than a partnership – it’s a revolution in how the world connects.”

For its part, the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) highlighted benefits for service and coverage:

“Our collaboration with MSSA is based on the shared objective of reaching new benchmarks for global connectivity,” said Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer, GSMA.

“By combining our strengths, we are laying the foundation for a future where satellite and terrestrial networks are fully integrated to provide unparalleled service and coverage.”

Basically, they’ll be looking to improve the efficiency and scalability of satellite communications, for more cost-effective worldwide terrestrial deployment. “By forging cooperative agreements with cellular operators, a new dimension of mobile services can be enabled, empowering consumers and enterprises with seamless satellite-augmented capabilities.”
