Programme on advanced cultivation techniques of black pepper organised
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduMore than 100 farmers from across the State gathered at the Regional Station of ICAR’s Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) at Appangala in Kodagu on Wednesday for the one-day farmers’ training programme on ‘Advanced and Sustainable Cultivation Techniques of Black Pepper’.
The training session led by expert scientists from ICAR-IISR’s Regional Station at Appangala covered a wide range of topics including varietal diversity, production of quality planting material, scientific farming practices and effective disease and pest management in black pepper.
The training programme organized in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode, was aimed at equipping the farmers with the latest knowledge and technologies for enhancing their black pepper production.
Farmers from Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Tumakuru, Mysuru, Mandya and Kalaburagi participated in the programme, which was inaugurated by Shyam Ayyappa, a progressive farmer from Siddapura, who also shared his farming experiences.
S.J. Anke Gowda, Head, ICAR-IISR’s Regional Station, Appangala, Kodagu, highlighted the institute’s pepper research activities and the role of Karnataka in the production of black pepper in the country.
A statement from the organisers said the event was well-received with participants actively engaging in discussions and learning about the innovative practices for improving black pepper cultivation.
