Bridge to ease traffic near Kasivilangi fish market runs into further delay
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduTiruchi Corporation’s pending project to construct a minor bridge across Kudamurutti River to decongest traffic near Kasivilangi fish market on Kuzhumani Road has been put on hold for various reasons.
As the narrow roads around the area are subjected to heavy traffic congestion during peak hours and weekends, the civic body mooted a proposal in June 2023 to construct a bridge near the market.
The proposed bridge would link Lingam Nagar on Kuzhumani Road with AUT Colony in Woraiyur to access the fish market. The bridge, designed to be around 120 feet long, can be accessed by two-wheelers, cars, and autorickshaws. Heavy vehicles, buses, and trucks are to be restricted on the bridge.
It was planned to divert the light motor vehicles heading from western suburbs such as Marunthandakurichi and Kuzhumani to Woraiyur and Fathima Nagar through the proposed bridge to reach the rest of the city. The diversion will help prevent traffic bottlenecks from recurring near the narrow roads of the Kasivilangi fish market.
The civic body also surveyed the existing bridges and roads near the fish market by roping in experts from the city to study the traffic volume and width of the roads. A detailed project report has been completed and has been submitted for administrative sanction. The new bridge is estimated to cost around ₹5 crore.
However, the civic body has temporarily shelved the project due to financial challenges. Officials say the project will be revived after constructing a new link road from Panjapur to Kudamuriti River, which is aimed at easing traffic congestion in densely populated areas.
Road users rue that a huge increase in the volume of traffic has been causing inconveniences. The undue delay has caused much resentment among road users as traffic has worsened near the fish market.
