Domestic passenger traffic, cargo movement reaffirm new traffic trends at Thiruvananthapuram airport

The domestic cargo movement through the Thiruvananthapuram international airport has seen an increase of 33% last year aligning with the new traffic trends in the airport.

A total of 3,279 metric tons (MT) of cargo was handled by the airport in 2024 against the 2,459 MT cargo handled in 2023.  Flowers and rubber stems were the main products handled by the airport on domestic routes.

The domestic flight services from the airport have also increased considerably during the last two years, with domestic passengers outnumbering international passengers. In 2024, the airport recorded a footfall of over 49.1 lakh passengers, with 26.4 lakhs travelling on domestic routes and 22.7 lakhs on international routes, against 22 lakh domestic travellers and 19 lakh international passengers in 2023. In the past, international passengers used to outnumber domestic passengers in Thiruvananthapuram.

According to airport authorities, the growth highlights the increasing demand for domestic air travel from Thiruvananthapuram along with international travel, reflecting the importance of the city airport for passengers from neighbouring regionsin Kerala, including the regions of southern Tamil Nadu. Bengaluru, Chennai, and Delhi have emerged as the top three domestic destinations. For the cargo movement, the airport handled domestic cargo from all the cities, including Guwahati.

Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Dubai have continued to hold their status as the top three preferred international destinations. Air India Express, Indigo, and Air Arabia have emerged as the top airlines with the highest market share in the domestic as well as the international sector. The airport operates over 100 daily flights with an average of over 15,000 passengers travelling each day. The airport has connectivity to 11 domestic and 14 international destinations.

The growth in passenger traffic and cargo figures aligns with industry trends, reaffirming the airport’s commitment to providing seamless connectivity and world-class service standards. Prioritising safety and security, the airport ensures a smooth and convenient experience for all travellers, said a statement from the airport recently.

The Thiruvananthapuram airport is the second largest airport in Kerala after the Cochin international airport which handled 49.30 lakh domestic passengers and 55.98 lakh international passengers in 2023-2024.
