Call to improve infrastructure at Coimbatore airport to match growth in passenger traffic
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduTamil Nadu’s second and South India’s seventh important airport, the Coimbatore International Airport is witnessing a rapid growth in passenger and freight traffic and there has been a persistent plea to improve its infrastructure.
The demand is for adequate seating and toilet facilities at the airport.
Coimbatore International Airport has two flights to Singapore and five flights to Sharjah a week, besides 29 domestic destinations such Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Pune, Goa. On an average 10,000 passengers used the airport a day, and on an average more than 3 lakh passengers use the airport in a month.
Two days back, The total passenger footfall was 11,172 . With flights getting delayed, several passengers were forced to go without a seat, due to inadequate chairs.
Kongu Global Forum said that construction of a new airport would take four years and until then the Airports Authority of India had to make interim arrangements for basic infrastructure.
AAI sources said that orders had been placed for chairs and very shortly, the chairs would be made available and toilet facility would also be improved.
