For the first time in Tamil Nadu, a Farmers Producers Organisation based in Madurai, has bought a millet processing unit at a subsidised price under the Tamil Nadu Millet Mission.

The millet mission which focuses on promoting millet production and consumption among people has been providing various inputs to farmers and traders to facilitate quality production and marketing.

Anr agriculture officer said the mission was stared in 2014-15 under National Agriculture Development Programme (NADP) with the view to bringing back the forgotten millets to regular cultivation. Farmers are given incentives to raise millets and they are also trained in farming and value addition.

Under the programme, a millet processing unit valued at ₹25 lakh was bought by an FPO, a cohort of 100 farmers based in Chinna Vagaikulam near Tirumangalam in Madurai district.

With 75% subsidy, the unit comprising nine machines was sold at ₹6.25 lakh to the FPO, said V. Mercy Jeyarani, Deputy Director, Agri Business and Agri Marketing.  “Following inspection of the Collector to ascertain its functioning, the FPO which received ₹6.25 lakh loan from the bank could benefit 60% relief,” she said.

The whole unit, which can process 500 kg per hour, consists of nine machines – pre cleaner, destoner, dehuller, pulveriser, multi grain colour sorter, grain polisher, packing machine, weighing machine, and sealing machine.

As assistance to market the produce would also be provided, it should be of great help to the farmers’ group. “As processing 500 kg is a huge volume for small-scale farmers, millets are procured from various farmers located in and around the district,” Ms. Mercy Jeyarani said.

Another application for a similar millet processing unit was under process and more farmers, learning about the subsidy, should come forward to set up such units, said the official.
