Alan Shearer disagrees with Paul Merson on Man United prediction as pressure claim made

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United are aiming for back-to-back Premier League wins at West Ham this afternoon (2pm).

Erik ten Hag's side are looking to dust themselves down following their midweek disappointment - after Turkish giants Fenerbahce salvaged a point in the Europa League. Last weekend's 2-1 win over Brentford helped ease the pressure on the Dutchman, with Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Holjund on-target to secure their comeback win.

United travel to the London Stadium to take on the Hammers - who have endured a tough start under new head coach Julen Lopetegui. West Ham have won just two of their opening eight, losing three, including heavy defeats against Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur to boot.

The Manchester Evening News takes a look at how three pundits see the West Ham match going;

Alan Shearer - Betfair

"This is tough to predict because of the unpredictability of Man United," the former Newcastle United striker said, speaking to Betfair. "Can they kick on and get another result like last weekend? I suspect not. The pressure may be right back on them this weekend.

"West Ham, with the atmosphere at the London Stadium, might have enough to take the points on Sunday just as they did in their last home game against Manchester United last season.

"I am going to pick West Ham to win."

Chris Sutton - BBC Sport

Sutton told the BBC Sport: "Things did not get any better for Hammers boss, Julen Lopetegui, with their defeat against Tottenham, and it seems he still doesn't know what the 'West Ham way' is.

"The Hammers need a big improvement, but this game is more about what Manchester United do and whether they turn up. They were excellent in the second half of their win over Brentford last time out - but now need to back it up, and for 90 minutes.

"Can they do it? You just never know with United, and I've given up on backing them to beat anyone.

"They are inconsistent, and what doesn't help is that they are playing in Turkey in the Europa League on Thursday night, so team selection and tiredness has to come into the equation, too.

"My daughter is doing maths revision with me at the moment, working out the area of triangles, you multiply the height by the width, then halve it. I can get all of those sums right - but I am always wrong about United - so I am going to let her make this prediction...

"I will stick to the maths. It's a lot easier than predicting United's results!"

Score prediction: West Ham 1-2 Manchester United

Paul Merson - Sportskeeda

"This is a big game for West Ham," the former Arsenal man began. "Irrespective of where they are or how they're performing, Manchester United are still a big club and, when they come visiting, then it will be a special occasion. But I actually think these teams can cause each other a lot of problems.

"I don't mean to disrespect United, but this is a great game for West Ham to turn the season around. We all agree they haven't clicked as well as they would've liked but, if that happens on Sunday, then it could be a massive test for Manchester United.

"Erik ten Hag will always be under pressure as manager at Manchester United. If he goes out and loses this game, they are getting beaten by a team sitting 15th in the league table and that's nowhere near good enough for a club like United.

"If he wins, well it's normal because you're expected to win these games. It feels as if no matter what he does, it's tough for him to get on the good books. I don't think he's going anywhere, though.

"He's in it for the long haul at Manchester United, that's the plan they've put in place at Old Trafford. I'm expecting a draw here."
