As beauty writers, we are used to testing the latest and greatest beauty and skincare products on the market. While there are new things being released constantly, there are some items that we return to time and time again.

Our beauty writer, Shani Cohen, decided to give her 60-year-old mum a bit of a mini makeover using some of her tried and true everyday must-haves. Shani says her mum prefers a 'less is more' look when it comes to makeup but they were surprised to find that one product that her mum had never heard of before completely transformed her skin.

Shani covered all the bases, from skincare prep to bronzer, blush and mascara. Read on to find out what products Shani used on her mum.

I decided to give my 60-year-old mum a bit of a makeover – something she rarely does for herself. She's always been more of a 'less is more' person when it comes to makeup, but I thought it would be fun to try a few of my favourite products on her. Little did I know that one particular product would completely transform her skin and it was something she'd never heard of before.

We started off by prepping her skin, which had been feeling a bit dry and dull lately. I pulled out the Ole Henriksen C-Rush Brightening Gel Crème (£33.60, down from £42) and massaged it into her face.

This cream is a personal favourite of mine and as soon as I applied it to my mum's skin, you could immediately see a difference. It felt hydrating and refreshing without being heavy and it gave her complexion a soft glow. My mum, who usually sticks to a basic moisturiser, was already impressed by how her skin felt.

Next up, I introduced her to the concept of primer. My mum had never used one before, so I decided to try the Glow Hub Hy-Glaze Face Frosting Serum Drops in shade Glaze (£16) on her.

This product is pretty much TikTok-famous at this point and I couldn’t wait to see how it worked on mature skin. The serum gave her skin an almost glass-like finish, helping everything else glide on effortlessly.

It transformed her complexion from tired and dull to radiant. My mum couldn’t believe the difference, I think this is the one product that really changed her whole perspective on makeup. By the end of our little pamper session, she was already asking if she could keep it.

With her skin looking fresh and glowy, I moved on to adding some colour. I used the Refy Cream Bronzer in shade Tan (£18) on her cheeks and temples to add warmth and a bit of dimension. A little goes a long way with this bronzer, and it blended seamlessly into her skin, giving her a subtle sun-kissed look.

I brightened up her under-eye area with the Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Radiant Concealer now £18.90 down from £27. It's a product that worked wonders to make her look more awake without settling into fine lines.

For her brows, I kept things simple but effective with got2b's 2-in-1 Eyebrow Gel (£10.99). It gave her brows a slight laminated look without being over the top, which was perfect for my mum, who isn’t a fan of bold brows. We finished off the face with a pop of blush using the Nudestix Nudies Matte All Over Face Blush (£30) in a soft pink shade that made her look fresh and healthy.

For the eyes, I used my trusty L'Oréal Voluminous Million Lashes Panorama Mascara (£10.39), it gave her lashes a lovely lift and definition without being clumpy. Finally, we moved on to the lips. I lined her lips with the Refy Lip Sculpt (£18) in Taupe, then added a classic swipe of MAC’s Velvet Teddy (£25), which complemented her skin tone beautifully.

To finish it off, I applied Clarins Lip Perfector in Soft Pink Glow (£19.55). My mum adored the soft, glossy finish and couldn’t stop commenting on how nice it smelled. By the end of it all, my mum’s skin was glowing, making her look youthful and radiant. For my mum, The Glow Hub serum was definitely the standout product. It completely transformed her complexion and gave her a newfound confidence in wearing makeup.
