Erik ten Hag could let England star leave Manchester United in 'cut-price' January deal

by · Manchester Evening News

Harry Maguire is being linked with a move away from Manchester United ahead of the January transfer window.

Maguire has entered the final year of his contract at United which expires in 2025, although the club do have the option to extend the deal by a further season. The 31-year-old moved to Old Trafford from Leicester City in 2019 for a fee worth £80million.

Erik ten Hag has handed nine appearances to Maguire for United this season, with six of those coming as a starter. The centre-back suffered a muscle injury in the goalless draw with Aston Villa in the Premier League last weekend and is now being linked with a move away from United.

According to the Daily Star, United are willing to allow Maguire to leave the club during the January transfer window. It has been reported that the Reds are open to offers for the England international just six months before his contract is due to expire.

The report claims that United have set an asking price of £10million for clubs wishing to sign Maguire in January. Should a deal be agreed for such a fee it would represent a £70million reduction on a player that United signed six years previously.

It was only in 2023 that Maguire was heavily linked with a move to West Ham. United rejected an offer worth £30million from the Hammers for Maguire, but have now seemingly dramatically lowered their price tag for the centre-back.

If United fail to find a new club for Maguire, then the report claims that United will activate the one-year option in the defender's contract to try again next summer. Ten Hag strengthened his centre-back options in the summer with the arrivals of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, although a foot injury has prevented Yoro from making his competitive debut for the club.
