Man United away end make Joshua Zirkzee feelings clear with reaction to Liverpool decision
by Kieran King · Manchester Evening NewsManchester United fans made their feelings clear to Joshua Zirkzee when he was introduced off the bench during their 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
Zirkzee, 23, endured a night to forget during their 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle last Monday. With United trailing 2-0 after 19 minutes, head coach Ruben Amorim made the decision to make a tactical switch 14 minutes later, substituting Zirkzee and replacing him with Kobbie Mainoo.
As Zirkzee's shirt number was displayed on the fourth official's board, large sections of the Old Trafford crowd produced ironic cheers as he jogged towards the touchline. After grabbing his jacket, Zirkzee appeared visibly upset with the reaction from the home faithful and walked towards the tunnel.
Ahead of United's trip to Liverpool, Amorim decided to drop Zirkzee down to the bench and recall Bruno Fernandes into the left attacking midfield position after he was banned against Newcastle. With four minutes to go and the scores at 2-2, Amorim chose to roll the dice and bring Zirkzee on for Rasmus Hojlund.
And as the former Bologna man came on, the United fans decided to sing his name and tried to get behind him, bellowing "oh Joshua Zirkzee" from the away end. The support was positive from the majority of the travelling supporters towards Zirkzee - a stark difference to six days ago against Newcastle.
Zirkzee almost had a moment to remember in stoppage-time, as he came close to setting up what would have been a dramatic winner for United. He was played in down the right hand channel and instead of shooting himself, he decided to tee it up for Harry Maguire inside the box but the defender skied his effort over.
It was a huge chance United might be left to rue come the end of the season, but the performance from Amorim's men was no doubt much better compared to recent weeks. The draw for United ends their four-game losing run and moves them up to 13th in the Premier League table.
