BREAKING: Manchester United sack Ruben Amorim after stunning Leeds rant

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim as head coach after a breakdown in relations with club bosses was laid bare in a remarkable press conference after the draw with Leeds. Amorim's strained relationship with director of football Jason Wilcox has been brought into the open by the 40-year-old in recent weeks and his outburst on Sunday has proved to be the final straw.

The Portuguese was informed on Monday morning that he was being sacked and he leaves the club with immediate affect. He departs with a record of just 24 wins in 63 games. The decision to dispense with the services of Amorim was taken by United's leadership team, including Wilcox and chief excecutive Omar Berrada.

It had been on the cards since the former Sporting boss used the final question of his post-match press conference on Sunday to fire a stunnig broadside at the club, accusing them of a smear campaign against him and demanding more power. "Guys, to stop with that, I noticed that you receive selective information about everything," he said.

"I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. And that is clear. I know that my name is not Tuchel, it's not Conte, it's not Mourinho, but I'm the manager of Manchester United. And it's going to be like this for 18 months, or when the board decides to change.

"So that was my point, I want to finish with that. I'm not going to quit. I will do my job until the other guy is coming here to replace me.

"I just want to say that I'm going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. And I was really clear on that. And that is going to finish in 18 months and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job, not to be a coach.

"If people cannot handle the Gary Neville and the criticism of everything, we need to change the club. No, guys, I just want to say that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach. And every department, the scouting department, the sports director needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on."

United face Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday night and Darren Fletcher is now expected to take charge at Turf Moor, with the Under-18s head coach handed the role on an interim basis.

A United statement said: "With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish."
