The bathroom can be a breeding ground for unpleasant odours and bacteria - not to mention being a hotspot for mould and grime due to excess condensation from your sink and shower.

However, cleaning enthusiasts have revealed a budget-friendly trick for sprucing up bathroom surfaces with an item you're likely to already have at home. When a fan of the cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch - whose real name is Sophie Hinchliffe - queried in a Facebook group about eliminating the smell of urine on her bathroom floor, she received a flood of advice.

The user's original plea was: "Hi, can anyone give me some tips on how to get the smell of urine off a bathroom floor around by the toilet please?" Amongst the cascade of replies, one person recommended: "Shaving foam. Smells lush!" Another suggested: "Shaving foam, not the gel one. Cheap foam one."

A third supporter confirmed: "I had this problem myself this week so I tried shaving foam. I only left it on for about 30 minutes but it did make a noticeable difference." It's advised that best results are achieved if the shaving foam is left on the problem area for a minimum of half an hour before rinsing, but some say leaving it overnight could provide even better outcomes.

Shaving foam bargains are out there, with a 200ml can of Gillette Standard Shaving Foam Sensitive going for just 98p at Superdrug, or you could grab a 250ml can of Boots Shave Foam for a quid. But if shaving foam isn't your go-to for a bathroom spruce-up, other savvy individuals have recommended alternatives to banish those niggling odours – think steam cleaners, bicarbonate of soda, mustard powder, vinegar, and lemon juice.

One tipster shared: "I found a handheld steam cleaner aimed well worked best. You need to clean out what's under the toilet pan where it sits on the tiles as well as around it. The smell is hiding where you can't see it. Cleaners will take some of the smell/urine off the floor but will mask it and it will come back if you don't get right underneath to the root cause."

Meanwhile, another chimed in with their concoction: "Half fill a spray container bottle with cold water, quarter lemon juice and a quarter white vinegar spray. Leave to dry. The vinegar smell will soon go. So will any other nasty smells - disinfects as well as deodorise."
