Tomato soup is one of the all time classic foods. Ultimately comforting, quick and filling, whether you want a hearty, hassle-free lunch or a light meal after a chilly winter walk, tomato soup will sort you out.

The standard, Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup costs a whopping £1.70 per can which is pricey, especially if you’re whipping up a meal for more than one person. So intrepid gourmet Zoe Chamberlain, Parenting Editor of our sister title Birmingham Live, decided to do a taste test.

With budget soups from Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl costing significantly less than the Heinz alternative, Zoe set out to see which were worth the money and which were best left on the supermarket shelf.

Heinz Tomato Soup

Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup costs £1.70 from Morrisons for 400g, which works out to 85p per half can portion. By contrast, in April 2022, this same can cost just £1, so these days its become a bit of a luxury.

Zoe said: “This had the most powerful tomato flavour of all the cans. It tasted fresher, more like homemade soup with fresh vine-ripened tomatoes.

“Reading the ingredients on the tin, it's easy to see why. It contains 89 percent tomatoes, cream and herb and spice extracts. Per half can portion, it contains 9.7g of sugar, 1.1g of salt and 1.7g of protein. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars.”

Morrisons Savers Tomato soup

Savers Tomato Soup costs 55p for 400g from Morrisons and earned high praise from Zoe. “This tasted amazing,” she reports. “It was really thick and creamy and packed a powerful sweet tomato punch. There was no pull-cap so I needed to use a tin opener to open it but that was no big deal.

Made with 67 percent tomatoes with mustard seed and flavourings, it contained 8.9g of sugar, 1g protein and 1g salt per half can. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

Lidl Tomato Soup

Lidl Tomato Soup costs 62p for 400g, up from just 40p in 2022. “It was made with tomato puree rather than tomatoes but it still had a lovely flavour,” Zoe said. “I wasn't so keen on the consistency. Where was the cream, Lidl? It seemed more watery than Heinz and all the other supermarket brands. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.”

Aldi Tomato Soup

Aldi Tomato Soup costs 62p for 400g, a direct price match to Lidl, same as back in 2022. “Just like Heinz, this was made with 89 percent tomatoes, together with cream and flavourings,” Zoe explained.

“It had a lovely creamy consistency but there wasn't quite such a punchy tomato flavour that was in some of the others, which was odd due to its high tomato content. It tasted a little bland in comparison. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.”

Final verdict

Zoe was left in no doubt that there was a clear winner in the soup contest. “Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the zesty, fresh flavour of the Heinz I had discovered something better,” she said. “I felt the Morrisons flavour was delicious and it was super creamy. It was the ultimate comfort food and I didn't want my bowl of soup to end. And it was £1.15 cheaper than Heinz. Winner.”
