I'm A Celebrity's Melvin Odoom makes one huge change to diet ahead of jungle stint
DJ and TV presenter Melvin Odoom, 44, said he has been doing extra gym sessions and tried intermittent fasting to get used to a different lifestyle he will be facing in the jungle
by Mark Jefferies · The MirrorMelvin Odoom has changed his diet and his fitness regime to ensure he is "jungle ready" for his I'm A Celebrity adventure.
The DJ and TV presenter has been doing extra gym sessions and tried intermittent fasting to help when the camp is surviving on small meals of rice and beans some days. Melvin, 44, said: "I've been trying to do a bit more gym training and I actually joined the running club - that's been really good for my cardio.
"I mean, since I found out about this, I've cut out sugar, but generally I don't think I'm that unhealthy a person. I don't really drink, I don't drink coffee, I don't eat excessively. So, yeah, it hasn't been, there hasn't been too much to cut out. One of my mates said: 'Why don't you try intermittent fasting, just for the days that you might struggle with'.
"I'm one of those guys. I'm a Leo, so I get hangry if I haven't eaten or I'm quite tired. So before we left, for the last week, I've been kind of, like eating a bit later in the day. I don't generally have an appetite in the morning anyway, so that's not been a problem, but I've been kind of having a super, super late lunch and seeing if I can still, like, go to the gym or do our show at Radio One and stuff like that.
"The intermittent fasting hasn't been easy, and I haven't really done it for that long, so I don't even know if it's gonna affect me in any way, but everything's in your mind, isn't it? So for me, like going three or four days eating a bit later has made me feel better about this experience. Rather than me just turning up and going, do you think I can survive on rice and beans one day, I can say, actually, last week on Tuesday, I didn't eat until four o'clock, and I was okay. So it's a mind thing.
Aside from hunger his other worry is he does not want to leave early having been the first out when he entered Strictly Come Dancing in 2016. Melvin said: "I've already been in this situation when I did Strictly, and I was the first person out, and no one wants to be the first person out with Strictly, or any competition like this.
"And my mindset is a little bit different with this. With this. I just want to survive. I want to make sure that I, you know, I get as far as possible and help my campmates out and just enjoy the experience. If I make it past day one, that is a win. To me, that's like winning the world cup."
