We all know the excitement (or worry) of opening a letter.

Finding it in the post could either spell good or bad news, and in some cases we end up tearing through the envelope without putting much thought. But did you know you might be opening your letters all wrong this entire time?

Thanks to our friends on social media, one Instagram account showed a "genius" method to tear through an envelope – and it's seriously time-saving. User @jeffandlaurenshow, who boasts 324,000 followers, showed the trick in a recent post online.

It shows a video where a person is tearing one corner of the envelope flap, before ripping in a straight line down the letter. So instead of tearing through and possibly damaging what's inside, you can slowly open it by using just one side of the envelope.

The caption read: "Jeff is obsessed with this satisfying letter opening technique!" Since it was shared late last month, it racked up thousands of likes and comments. One said: "Are you kidding me? This is genius." While another added: "Brilliant."

And a third commented: "You have to rethink EVERYTHING." Then a fourth chimed in: "I have indeed been doing it wrong." Others, however, were quite puzzled as to how people haven't thought about this method before.

Someone said: "I've opened my mail like this for years." Then a second posted: "That is the opposite of satisfying. It's just so wrong." Meanwhile other social media users admitted to ripping through their paper every time.

Looking for more life hacks? Just recently, people were left blown away by a game-changing hack to help you pour liquids without making a mess in the kitchen.

It shows a bottle where you can pull the lid before placing it back to leave a little gap for the liquid to pour gently into the bowl. The subtle trick aims to control the amount you pour, without any splashing.

And on another occasion, people were "today years old" after finding out a hidden feature for specific DIY tool. It was shared on the popular Today Years Old account on X.
