The colder months are almost upon us but due to rising energy bills many may refrain from turning up their heating. While this could help with increasing costs it can sadly mean homes become breeding grounds for mould due to the low temperatures.

One of the most common reasons mould forms in the home is due to condensation caused by cold surfaces. Condensation occurs when water vapour contained in the air condenses on cold surfaces and creates a damp environment. Thankfully Mrs Hinch fans have shared a £1 hack and fans swear by the hack so much they even claim it can stop the mould coming back for good - so no need to panic.

Wider-known techniques to get rid of mould include shop-bought 'mould removers' or baking soda and white vinegar however the latest hack includes just one item, which is often priced at £1 in most stores. In a post on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips group on Facebook, one woman asked for tips on how to effectively clean mould from her bedroom wall, and someone offered a unique solution - using Listerine mouthwash.

The Facebook user said using mouthwash can completely stop mould from re-growing. They said: "Original Listerine mouthwash stops it re-growing. Leave the window open a little for airflow a few times a week." But does the hack really work? The Mirror asked cleaning expert Emily Barron from Rezigo for clarify on the tip, and she assured us it would in fact work. She said: "Yes - Listerine can kill mould and keep it at bay as it kills 99.9% of germs and bacteria in your mouth, the same can be said for killing bacteria in your home.

"To kill the fungal spores of mould, use plain, clear, and inexpensive ethanol-based mouthwash. Dilute the mixture by using one part mouthwash to three parts water. Spray this on the affected areas once every few days and keep the room well-ventilated or use a dehumidifier to ensure airflow and reduce the risk for further build-up."
