BBC Strictly Come Dancing's Chris McCausland's heartbreaking three words over his blindness
Strictly Come Dancing's Chris McCausland gave a devastating three word response when asked a question about the possibility of having a small percentage of his sight restored
by Beth Hardie · The MirrorStrictly’s Chris McCausland discussed his thoughts on a procedure to improve his sight whilst sharing his experiences abroad and what destination has made him feel the "saddest".
Despite being the first blind contestant to ever take part in Strictly Come Dancing, comedian Chris McCausland, 47, has stunned the judges and audience every week with his determination and perseverance. With the very able help of his professional partner Dianne Buswell, 35, Chris has proved that it is possible to achieve anything if you set your mind to it.
In an attempt to share his experience in the ballroom with the public, the couple had the lights switched off completely in the BBC studio while they danced to John Lennon’s Instant Karma!((We All Shine On) to show exactly what it’s like for Chris to perform in total darkness. It was a stark and powerful reminder of what life is like every day for him.
The Liverpudlian has a hereditary condition called retinitis pigmentosa and lost his sight completely when he was 22, although he started going blind gradually as a baby. After having to abandon plans to be a software engineer while at university because of his disability, he ended up falling into stand up comedy and regularly appears on Would I Lie to You? and Have I Got News for You?
Last year dad of one Chris starred in a Channel 4 travel show The Wonders of the World I Can't See. He visited famous tourist attractions accompanied by other comics including Harry Hill and Tom Allen. His dislike of travel became very apparent, largely due to the fact he can’t enjoy any of the monuments or scenery.
"What's the point going all that way to stand in front of the thing that everyone is looking at, but that I can't see?" he said of the experience. There was one Wonder that really brought his situation home though - Niagara Falls. In an interview with inews, he admitted that not being able to see it made him feel the "saddest". "With that one, I was the saddest, I think, because I wasn’t able to see it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m much more accepting of who I am these days - I’ve stopped having tantrums every time I spill drinks or bang my head on the door frame," he said.
Chris repeats the same heartbreaking three words "what’s the point" when it comes to the possibility of having "10 per cent" of his vision restored. However if it could be cured, he’d definitely go for that. "A miracle to cure my blindness completely? Yeah, I'd consider that," he revealed.
Although he enjoyed his experiences on the show, Chris isn’t tempted to sign up for family summer holidays with his Brazilian wife Patricia and their 10 year old daughter. "I get very bored in my own mind when I don’t have much to do, and so they tend to go off on holiday together, or with friends," he said. "I stay at home, and work. I like to work."
