Gasps in court as Paul Doyle's dashcam footage from Liverpool parade revealed
Dashcam footage played in court shows 54-year-old Paul Doyle swerving into fans who were making their way back from Liverpool's waterfront after the victory parade
by Tim Hanlon · The MirrorGasps were heard in court as dashcam footage showed the shocking moment Paul Doyle ploughed through crowds after Liverpool FC’s victory parade.
The video, from inside the Ford Galaxy, captured audio and visuals as the 54-year-old swerved into hundreds of fans who were making their way back from the city’s waterfront after the celebration. Doyle, who admitted 31 offences related to the crash last month, had been heading into the city centre from his home in Croxteth to collect friends.
Footage, played to Liverpool Crown Court at his sentencing hearing on Monday, showed him driving through the city centre. Large crowds part to allow him to continue along Dale Street.
Prosecutor Paul Greaney told the court: “We will play a piece of footage that illustrates the prosecution case. It is from an internal camera, the dashcam, within the defendant’s vehicle, which recorded both video and audio.
"The footage we are about to display shows the defendant’s driving from a point at just before he encountered traffic management measures, in the form of cones, on Dale Street. His driving had been dangerous even before this point, but what we are about to see represents the most serious aspect of his conduct. What we are about to display on the screens is truly shocking.”
People begin banging on his car as he drives along but Doyle rather than stop, he speeds up, blowing his horn as he does so. Children are seen jumping out of the way of the car and as he goes along Doyle can be heard saying: “f***ing p*****." The car then comes to a set of traffic cones and stops, where Doyle again says “f***ing p*****”, with crowds shouting back “w*****”.
There are around half a dozen people are thrown to the floor, and Doyle continues to shout: “F***ing move get out the f***ing way, f***ing hell. F***s sake move get out the f***ing way.”
A child is seen to be thrown to the floor by his car. Doyle again shouts: “Get out the f***ing way. Move. Move. Move. Move.” A terrified woman appears to become trapped under the front of the car, but Doyle continues to drive forward.
While the footage is being played there horrified gasps from the public gallery in the court and many people were in tears. At the same time Doyle had his head bowed down and was sobbing.
The footage, which will not be released because of its graphic nature, also showed the windscreen smash after a man landed on it. Others could be seen on the bonnet of the car as Doyle continued to drive and people, including children, appear to go under the vehicle.
The sentencing is expected to continue until Tuesday.
