TGI Fridays on brink of administration with 49 UK high street restaurants at risk

The well known restaurant chain TGI Fridays, which has 49 branches across the UK, is on the brink of going into administration, putting jobs under threat just before Christmas, according to reports.

Liberty Bar and Restaurant Group, which own the famous brand, filed a notice to appoint administrators for the second time in just a few weeks.

The notice, filed on December 19, halts debt collection and gives the company breathing room to create a rescue plan.

Phil Broad, president of TGI Fridays international franchising, confirmed: "The Directors of TGI Fridays UK can confirm that a notice of intent to appoint administrators was filed with the court."

He added: "This step brings the new owners, who assumed control last month, closer to securing and strengthening the long-term future of TGI Fridays in the UK."

He said the priority is to keep the company's 2,000 staff members in their jobs, reports the Express. It was also confirmed that all TGI Fridays restaurants will remain open over Christmas.

The restaurant chain arrived in the UK in 1986 after a successful start in the US. The company also collapsed into administration back in September and put 87 restaurants up for sale.
