Washing white clothes can be a real headache, especially when there's always that one stubborn stain that refuses to budge, no matter how many times it takes a spin in the machine.

White socks and other light-coloured garments are notorious for picking up stains more easily, with everything from sweat and body oils to general grime leaving an unsightly yellowish tinge over time. But fear not, Mary Hunt, the savvy money-saving guru and founder of Everyday Cheapskate, has come forward with what she claims is the "absolutely best" homemade concoction for banishing laundry stains once and for all. She excitedly shares: "I'm excited to tell you how to make a fabulous, if not magical, do-it-yourself homemade laundry stain remover. Compare this to...any other pricey commercial product. This stain remover recipe is so easy and cheap to make. And wow, does it perform!"

The potent laundry stain remover can be made using just natural ingredients, reports the Express.

You'll need:

  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Blue Dawn washing up liquid
  • Empty spray bottle

Hydrogen peroxide works wonders on tough organic stains like blood, wine, or coffee by breaking them down into smaller particles, making it easier to lift the stain off white fabrics. Not only does it tackle the tough stuff, but it also has a gentle bleaching effect, helping to remove lighter stains without resorting to harsh chlorine bleach.

Dish soap is packed with surfactants that work to lift stains out during the wash, and it's particularly adept at cutting through greasy messes, thanks to its design to tackle tough kitchen grease. Mary recommends opting for Blue Dawn dish soap for its superior stain-fighting surfactants but assures that any dish soap will do the trick.

Method

For those tough stains on white clothing, an easy DIY solution is at hand according to the latest home hack. Just mix one part washing-up liquid with two parts fresh hydrogen peroxide in an empty spray bottle. A handy funnel can help pour the ingredients without any spillage.

Shake well to ensure the contents are combined before going to town on those pesky stains by spraying directly onto the affected area of your whites. Domestic guru Mary has shared a promising tip: "Don't be surprised when that stain disappears all by itself! If it doesn't, rub the stain with a brush or clean white cloth (you don't want to transfer color from a cleaning cloth to the stained item)."

Once the stain looks like it is getting smaller or is gone completely then simply place in the washing machine on a regular wash. Once washed, either air-dry the garment outdoors or use a gentle tumble dry setting, and your whites should return to their former glory.

Mary also notes that this stain buster isn't just for white fabric; it's equally effective on colours. "It tackles red wine stains, organic stains such as blood and grass, pet stains and baby stains. You can use this on coloured items as well as whites (although test it first in an inconspicuous place)."
