Chinese game publishing firm Tencent is reportedly gearing up to offload a number of minority investments in Japanese studios, one of which is said to be Rune Factory and Story of Seasons publisher Marvelous.

The report of Tencent’s moves to divest from Japanese studios comes via Bloomberg. According to anonymous sources with knowledge on the matter, Tencent has begun engaging in negotiations to exit its positions in said companies. It’s been reported that in some cases, Tencent may be selling at a loss as it aims to move swiftly on these divestments.

Marvelous has had releases as recent as Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, which came out to critical and player praise in June 2025.

Reports further claim that Tecent won't be pulling out of all Japanese gaming investments - stakes in PlatinumGames, FromSoftware, and FromSoft’s parent company Kadokawa group remain unaffected. Tencent is also redirecting its priorities toward getting more involved with its portfolio teams, as well as directing its interest toward games with user-generated content, such as Minecraft and Roblox, and the creators developing within them.

Tencent has maintained that games are a “core to Tencent’s business,” and that it will continue to maintain an invested presence in the Japanese gaming market. Marvelous has declined to comment at this time. Stay tuned to the Tencent topic for more news and updates.
