Kingdom Hearts 4 will also launch on Nintendo Switch 2
There's no sign of a release date, but whenever it's ready, the next numbered Kingdom Hearts sequel will launch on a Nintendo platform on Day 1 for the first time.
by Ozzie Mejia · ShacknewsThe penultimate reveal for Tuesday's Nintendo Direct was one that few could have expected. As part of a larger announcement that the full Kingdom Hearts collection would release natively on Nintendo Switch 2, viewers also learned that the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 4 would also release on Switch 2 whenever it's ready to launch. On top of that, Nintendo had some never-before-seen footage of the game ready to roll.
There's still little to go on, in terms of plot, for Kingdom Hearts 4. Those who watched Tuesday's Nintendo Direct were greeted by a mysterious cloaked figure sitting atop a skyscraper in the all-new city of Quadratum. This mystery character revealed that Quadratum was a land without light or darkness until she and her cohorts (as well as Sora) showed up, consequently bringing the Heartless along with them. New Heartless forms were seen attacking the city with Sora fending them off using new abilities. This is the first new footage of Kingdom Hearts 4 seen since its initial reveal four years ago.
In addition to the Kingdom Hearts 4 reveal, today's Nintendo Direct revealed native Switch 2 versions of the previous games in the series. Titled Kingdom Heartgs Collection 1-3, this compilation collects Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts 3 + Re Mind. Nintendo Switch owners who own the previous cloud versions of the Kingdom Hearts series will be able to transfer their save data. The collections will also be coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
There is no indication as to when the next Kingdom Hearts will launch. Next year marks the franchise's 25th anniversary, but Square Enix is not committing to a launch window at this time. Look for Kingdom Hearts 4 to release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 whenever it's ready. Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3 will come to consoles on October 8. The compilation is already available on Steam as part of Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece.
