Error codes like Centipede in Destiny 2 are infuriating whenever they happen, and some don’t really have an easy or consistent solution. Centipede is one such, but there are some things you can do to alleviate the problem, even if they aren’t optimal.

Per the official Bungie Support page, Centipede is a general networking error caused by some connection issue between your machine and the Destiny 2 servers. What that means will depend on your network environment, Bungie server status, or some other general connection problem.

One of the most common causes of Centipede errors is Steam’s regular downtime on Tuesday afternoons, Eastern Time. During these periods, Steam servers disconnect from all users everywhere, and Destiny 2 will see increased Centipede and other networking error codes.

Centipede errors might also happen during Destiny 2 patch deployment, server maintenance, or some other server-related issue. Be sure to check the official Destiny 2 server status account for updates on whether the D2 servers are having any issues.

If none of the above is the case, you might be having issues with the internet on your end. It’s hard to give exact advice on how to address client connection problems, as no two setups are exactly the same.

There are a few things you can do:

  • Restart your modem and/or router. Sometimes a quick reset is all it takes to fix connection problems, and it’s usually the most painless. Simply unplug your internet equipment, leave it off for 30 seconds or so, then plug it in. Provided everything boots up successfully, you very well might be good to go.
  • Swap to a wired connection without a VPN (if using). Wifi connections can be frustratingly inconsistent, so if your console or PC is using it, try connecting via hardwire to your internet devices.
  • Ensure your NAT Type is set to open. Anything less than an open NAT type can interfere with your console or PC’s connection with outside services. You’ll need to log into your router and turn on a setting called UPnP, or even enable Port Forwarding. Refer to your router’s official documentation for instructions on how to enable these settings.
  • Flush your PC’s DNS. Flushing the DNS is a slightly more advanced method of addressing internet issues. Open a command prompt by pressing the Windows key and searching “cmd,” right-click on Command Prompt and select “Run as Administrator,” then type ipconfig/flushdns. Once the command runs, try connecting to Destiny 2 again.

There’s also a non-zero chance something else might be the issue, or even be an error introduced by Bungie themselves. In these situations, your only recourse is to wait or, if you want some kind of response to your issue, contact Bungie Support directly by posting on the Support forums or reaching out on social media.
