Dragon Quest series crosses 100 million units sold

That's a lot of dragons and a lot of questing.

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii took to Twitter/X to share the news that the DQ franchise has surpassed 100 million units sold.

“This is all thanks to the unwavering support from all you fans who've cheered on Dragon Quest over the years, and to the entire team of staff who've backed it up every step of the way,” Horii wrote. “Truly, thank you so much. Forty years ago, when we were making the very first Dragon Quest, I never even dreamed we'd reach this point. It's beyond words. Here's to many more adventures with the Dragon Quest series—looking forward to your continued support!”

Dragon Quest—known for a while as Dragon Warrior in the west—contains 11 main entries; the most recent, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, released in 2017. There are also spin-off games and remakes such as 2025’s Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake.

Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams’ development was restarted from scratch per an announcement by Horii and executive producer Yosuke Saito in May 2026.
