QSSR AI upscaling coming to PS5
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei will be the first games to support QSSR.
by Donovan Erskine · ShacknewsSony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it’s bringing AI upscaling technology to the base PS5. Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is a new feature that Sony says will improve both image detail and stability.
A new PlayStation Blog post features all the details about QSSR. Similar to PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), QSSR uses AI guidance to enhance visual fidelity. While PSSR is still the “gold standard” of this technology, QSSR brings these visual enhancements to owners of the base PS5 console. Sony published a side-by-side comparison video of QSSR running in Marvel’s Wolverine.
QSSR was born from Project Amethyst, a collaboration between PlayStation and AMD. While Sony says it was previously impossible to bring this tech to PS5, a “streamlined neural network architecture” and a “hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5” have changed that.
Updates are being released today for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei that will take advantage of QSSR. The technology will be made to all PlayStation developers in the future.
