Nexus Mods announces updated guidelines on generative AI tagging & moderation

Generative AI content now has several categories, and uploaders found to have not tagged mods appropriately will be 'subject to moderation action.'

Nexus Mods has released new guidelines for generative AI content on its platform, which includes expanding generative AI into several mod categories and stressing appropriate tagging, lest moderation is required.

Nexus Mods posted its update on genAI content on its forums this week. While Nexus Mods is in no way outright banning generative AI, it is tightening its restrictions on how AI mods are handled.

Nexus Mods' updated generative AI guidelines are aimed at forcing modders to better tag and clarify the nature of AI mods or face moderation.

Firstly, generative AI has been broken up into several categories with the aim of better conveying to players what these mods are trying to do. The new categories and Nexus’ definitions for them can be found below:

  • AI-Generated Content - AI-Generated code, user interface elements, voices, dialogue, translations, music, in-game AI-generated assets.
  • AI Media - AI promotional art, thumbnails, videos, mod page descriptions or media outside of the mod content in-game.
  • AI Assisted - Developer-led code, content, or mod assets, with limited AI involvement, AI texture upscaling, AI audio upscaling/cleaning, AI concept art not in final mod content.

Nexus Mods goes on to explain that it is cracking down on inaccurate mod tagging and information in this regard. Failure to tag mods in correct fashion will result in moderation, and purposeful abuse of the tagging system will result in immediate punishment if proven.

Nexus Mods is hoping that not only will these changes limit the flow of slop AI mods through its system, but force modders to better clarify the nature, purpose, and credibility of any AI mods submitted. Stay tuned to the Nexus Mods topic as we watch for updates on this story.
