How to use Bonestone in Mina the Hollower

Bonestone Dust is a kind of a failsafe alternative currency to bones, but it can still be used to buy items, upgrades, and level-ups.

If you’ve played Mina the Hollower long enough, you might have noticed that sometimes you get Bonestone Dust. It’s a currency you collect when you grab a gem or other treasure that converts into Bonestone. You also get it when you finish repairing Spark Generators as every bone you’ve collected at that point is converted into Bonestone. It’s a good thing because Bonestone cannot be lost, but it can be stored and used the same as bones. Here’s how.

How to use Bonestone to shop

Bonestone can be used when you don't have the regular bones to cover the cost of anything in a shop.

When buying anything from a shop, your default currency for purchase is always regular bones. However, you can use Bonestone in place of regular bones to keep your growing currency and use stored currency instead. In a shop, you can switch to Bonestone as the primary currency by pressing the top face button that is also responsible for your Sidearms while on a shop’s menu. On PS5 it’s the triangle button, Y button on Xbox, and X button on Switch. That swaps out your bones counter with your Bonestone counter.

One good thing is that if you would run out of one currency but have enough to cover the remaining cost left by the other, it will automatically switch to the remaining currency to cover the cost, so you don’t have to worry about having enough bones or Bonestone by themselves for any purchase.

How to use Bonestone to level up

The Bonestone Dust machine in Mina's Underlab can trigger a level-up on command if you have collected enough Bonestone to cover the cost.

Generally, collecting Bones is how you level up in Mina the Hollower. It’s automatic when Mina hits the level-up threshold of bones required. You just have to choose the stat you want to upgrade from the menu at that point. However, you can also trigger a level-up manually if you have enough Bonestone to cover the cost it would take to do so.

Go to any Underlab checkpoint and interact with the machine in the top right corner. That’s the Bonestone Dust machine. It allows you to convert any Bonestone Dust you’ve accumulated into actual bones. Be warned. You should really only ever convert your Bonestone to bones if you want to trigger a level-up or if you’re going to make an immediate purchase. All you need to do is interact with the machine to get to its screen, change each number counter to the amount of Bonestone you have stored, or a lesser amount if that’s all you require, and confirm. Just make sure to stand near the tube to the left of the machine. That’s where all of the bones will shoot out and they’ll bounce all over the place if you’re not there. If you output enough Bonestone, you’ll level up right then and there.

Bonestone is a currency you can’t lose by dying, so it’s good to save it up for some big purchases down the line if you can. Even so, never forget that in addition to the Bonestone you find in the wild, taking a big heap of bones to the finish of a Spark Generator is a great way to convert bones into safe Bonestone Dust. Now that you know how to use it, be sure to stay on our Mina the Hollower topic for more guides and coverage.
