Year after year, generation after generation, thousands have traveled from around the world to spend Tishrei with the Rebbe MH”M at Beis Chayenu — and Eshel has been there to welcome them.

Then, now, and always.

Throughout the month of Tishrei, thousands of guests come to be near the Rebbe MH”M, and Eshel works tirelessly to care for them in every way. In three large dining halls, thousands of full, nourishing meals are distributed daily to all the guests, from young bochurim to adults.

Full, satisfying meals are served both in the morning and evening, including a variety of salads and side dishes. Three enormous kitchens operate around the clock to ensure that every guest receives their portion.

In addition, Eshel provides beds, mattresses, and sleeping equipment for those who have found a place to stay but do not have their own bedding, ensuring that every guest has a comfortable place to rest.

Spiritually, Eshel provides organized learning sessions at 770, along with shiurim, farbrengens, and workshops for all the guests throughout the month of Tishrei.

The Rebbe’s Guests

The Rebbe’s extraordinary personal concern for the Tishrei guests — and his special appreciation for those who cared for them — was evident throughout the years.

In Tishrei 5733 (1972), the Rebbe personally came to the guests’ dining hall and asked for Rabbi Moshe Yeruslavsky, a”h, the founder and director of Eshel-Hachnosas Orchim. When Rabbi Moshe could not make his way through the packed hall, the Rebbe said that if he could not come to the Rebbe, the Rebbe would go to him.

When they met, the Rebbe thanked him and blessed him for his work on behalf of the guests.

And this was not an isolated occasion.

For many years, the Rebbe personally visited the guests during Tishrei. At farbrengens, the Rebbe would call Rabbi Moshe Yeruslavsky and give him portions of the Rebbe’s own mezonos, challah, wine, or water to distribute among the guests. Before Rosh Hashanah in certain years, the Rebbe even sent pomegranates to be shared with them.

The Rebbe also personally supported the work of Eshel financially and repeatedly expressed his appreciation for those who dedicated themselves to ensuring that the guests had everything they needed.

In one response regarding the work of Eshel, the Rebbe wrote of the greatness of the mitzvah and connected it with *“blessings from the Source of blessings.”*

On another occasion, after receiving a report about the work of Hachnosas Orchim, the Rebbe wrote:

“There is no way to estimate the greatness of the matter and its value.”

The Rebbe referred to those who came for Tishrei as “my guests.”

Those two words say everything.

The thousands who come to 770 are not simply visitors. They are the Rebbe’s guests. Caring for their meals, their sleeping arrangements, and their physical and spiritual needs is therefore a unique privilege — the privilege of caring for the Rebbe’s own guests.

This year, the sharp rise in food prices has placed a heavy financial burden on Eshel, especially with the large number of guests coming to be with the Rebbe at Beis Chayenu during this special month.

What does it cost to host all these guests?

3,000 Bochurim
1,400 Girls
1,000 Yungeleit

In addition, more than 750 families come for Sukkos and Simchas Torah.

The cost of hosting each guest:

1 day – $36
2 days – $72
5 days – $180
10 days – $360

The total for the month is $770 per guest.

For more than fifty years, Eshel has carried this responsibility.

From the days when the Rebbe personally visited the guests’ dining hall and entrusted portions from his own table to be distributed among them, until today, when thousands of meals are prepared each day in Eshel’s kitchens — the mission remains the same:

To care for the Rebbe’s guests.

The Rebbe actively supported this important organization, and in 5748 (1988), the Rebbe personally donated $10,000 to Eshel-Hachnosas Orchim. The Rebbe also emphasized many times that the responsibility of hosting the guests falls upon the local community.

Today, that responsibility — and that privilege — is ours.
