This Shabbos, Yud Beis Tammuz, marks the fourth yahrtzeit of our dear son, Sholom. In Sholom’s memory, we encourage acts that bring more peace into the world l’ilui nishmas Sholom A”H ben Yblct”a Menachem Mendel Halevi.

As part of this, we are urging parents, schools, camps, and communities to renew their commitment to preventing a devastating tragedy: hot-car deaths.

Every year, dozens of children lose their lives after being left in hot cars. Contrary to popular belief, these emergencies happen often. Baruch Hashem, many times it is only for a short period, and B’Hashgacha Protis, the child is found in time and survives. But we cannot rely on miracles alone. We need to do our part to keep our children safe. A simple change in routine, fatigue, stress, or distraction can cause a child to be forgotten in the back seat, and the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise to deadly levels within minutes.

To help protect our children, we are asking our community to take two vital steps today:
1. Join the “Is Your Child There?” movement at isyourchildthere.org
Parents, educators, and organizations are encouraged to commit to implementing an attendance alert system that immediately notifies parents if their child has not arrived at school. A simple notification provides a critical safeguard when seconds matter. In fact, this system recently saved a girl’s life in Florida. You can learn about the different attendance systems available here– one of which is currently being offered for free for a limited time.

2. Pre-order a Free Clever Elly Device at 59seconds.org
In-car technology provides another crucial layer of protection. The Clever Elly is a simple device that reminds drivers to check the back seat before leaving their vehicle. We have already distributed thousands of these devices; we have ordered more, and they can now be pre-ordered for free through our site.

We are so grateful to see our community already taking action. L.E.C. has implemented multiple layers of protection, including a security guard who peers into every parked vehicle to ensure no one is left behind. We were also incredibly inspired when we arrived at camp this year and heard the “Check the Backseat” safety song (lyrics by Yossi and Tzippy Weiss, produced with credit to CGI Miami) playing on the loudspeakers during drop-off.

Lastly, here are some helpful everyday tips to incorporate into your routine:

Always check the back seat before locking your vehicle.
Place an essential item, such as your phone, purse, briefcase, or employee ID, in the back seat next to your child.

Utilize reminder technology, such as the Clever Elly.

If someone else is transporting your child, always confirm they have arrived safely.

Ask your child’s school or camp to contact you immediately if your child does not arrive as expected.

Thank you for your compassion and for standing with us in this vital mission. May we merit techiyas hameisim and the coming of Moshiach, when the world will be filled with true and everlasting Sholom and peace.

With deep appreciation,
Menachem & Nechama Tauber
