A recent letter issued by Chabad Rabonim in Eretz Yisroel raised a halachic concern about a common way of blowing shofar, particularly an additional sound sometimes heard at the end of shevarim. According to the letter, when the sound is produced improperly, it may affect whether the listener fulfills the mitzvah at all.

The issue carries particular weight for the thousands of anash and bochurim who spend their Rosh Hashanah bringing shofar to Yidden who may otherwise have no opportunity to hear it. A mistake in the tekios can sometimes cause the listener not to be yotzeh, meaning he may not fulfill the mitzvah of hearing shofar, chas v’shalom.
To make the relevant halachos clear and practical, Rabbi Tenenbaum, baal tokeah at 770, and Rav Cadaner, one of the Rabonim in Kollel L’Rabbonei Chabad, recorded a concise demonstration released by Merkos 302’s Beis Hora’a Chabad showing how to blow shofar in a halachically proper way, as well as Zichronos of how the Rebbe blew Shofar.
