Thirty-five years ago, on Shabbos Parshas Behaalosecha 5751 (1991), the Rebbe dedicated a sicha towards the end of the farbrengen to the Colel Chabad melaveh malkah that was to be held that night. In the sicha, the Rebbe highlighted the unique connection between Colel Chabad and the Menorah in the Beis HaMikdosh.

Parshas Behaaloscha begins with the lighting of the Menorah, which the Rebbe explained serves as a symbol of the Jewish people. Though the Menorah contained seven branches, it was fashioned from a single piece of gold. The Rebbe explained that the seven branches represent the different types of Jews and the many ways in which they serve Hashem. Yet despite those differences, all Jews share a single essence and are united as one people.

This concept is reflected in the very name “Colel Chabad.” “Colel” (lit. collective) signifies inclusion and unity, while “Chabad” (the acronym of Chochma, Bina, Daas) represents the intellectual source from which the various qualities and paths of Jewish service emerge. Together, they express the idea of many individuals joined together in a common purpose.

“In a very real way,” the Rebbe said, this describes the activities of Colel Chabad, which provides assistance to Jews “without distinction,” helping with both their material and spiritual needs. By caring for every Jew, the organization strengthens the sense of unity and responsibility that binds the Jewish people together.

This emphasis on unity was championed by the Rebbeim throughout the generations, beginning with the Alter Rebbe, who not only founded Colel Chabad, but served as its practical leader, devoting great energies toward it.

Concluding his remarks, the Rebbe blessed those who support Colel Chabad, encouraging them to recognize that they, too, are part of a “Colel” — people who do not live only for themselves, but who share a connection and responsibility to others. Through this spirit of unity and tzedakah, the Rebbe said, the Jewish people move closer to the coming of the Redemption.
