A Letter From a Mother to Moshe Rubashkin

by COLlive Editor · COLliveDear Moshe,
I’m writing this from Eretz Yisroel while my son is still in Crown Heights for Tishrei.
As a mother, sending your child so far from home is both exciting and a little scary. You want him to experience everything—770, the davening, the learning, the farbrengens, the dancing—but somewhere in your heart you are always wondering: Is he okay? Is he eating? Does he have what he needs?
A few days ago, the place my son had arranged to stay was suddenly canceled.
At the last minute, he had nowhere to sleep.
My heart sank. I was in Eretz Yisroel, and my son was thousands of miles away. There was nothing I could do.
I kept thinking about him carrying his bags, not knowing where he would go or where he would sleep.
I wished I could be there to hug him and tell him that everything would be okay.
And then I heard: “He went to Moshe Rubashkin.”
A place was found for him immediately.
But he received so much more than a bed.
He received food, warmth, a place to sit, and that special Chassidishe energy that makes a bochur feel at home. He was not made to feel like a burden or like someone who arrived too late.He was welcomed with care, as though someone had been waiting for him.
And I cried. Not because something was wrong—but because suddenly I knew my son was being taken care of. Moshe, you may see another bochur walking through your door.
A mother sees her son.
You may see another guest who needs a place to sleep.A mother sees the child she sent across the world. And knowing that my son has somewhere warm to come back to, food when he’s hungry, and people who care about him—that gives me a peace I cannot explain.
Thank you for giving him not only shelter, but also warmth, dignity, and a true Tishrei experience.
Thank you for taking care of the Rebbe’s guests as if they were your own.May the Rebbe give you and your family endless brachos, in gashmiyus and in ruchniyus, for everything you do.
With heartfelt gratitude,
A grateful mother
